At Fairlight, books are close to our heart and we are always excited to share news from like-minded people. That’s why we’d like to bring attention to the Shelter Book Club, a new project whose aim is to bring together book lovers with a shared passion for social justice and a deep love of reading.
For those unfamiliar with it, Shelter is a registered housing and homelessness charity which campaigns in both England and Scotland. Over the past fifty years they have supported millions of people struggling with bad housing or homelessness. They offer free advice and legal support for those in need, as well as operating an emergency helpline.
Their new book club subscription allows its members access to exclusive content, including a book community forum, podcasts, author Q&As and more. Members also get two book options every six weeks, with the chance to recommend and vote for the next book to be read. The best part is that your subscription fee, £4.99 per month, goes to supporting Shelter’s essential work. You can even gift a Shelter Book Club subscription this Christmas. A fantastic idea, and wonderful present for anyone bookish.
The book club forum, hosted by Bookclubz, gives subscribers the chance to interact and have important discussions about the topics and themes of the chosen books, as well as hopefully developing friendships. This has been a great asset in allowing connectivity at a time when physical contact is limited.
Having been launched earlier this year, the book club has plans of evolving and adapting to suit its members. Despite the challenges imposed by the recent lockdowns, they would love to be able to offer some offline content in the future, so watch this space.
